Welcome
Once again, I would like to welcome you and your child to Grade One! The children are adjusting well to their new grade and teacher. The month of September went smoothly. It was very exciting! I am looking forward to a fabulous Fall and continue to welcome any questions or concerns, which might arise.
October Themes
Religion and Family Life
As Thanksgiving approaches the students will focus on giving thanks for all our blessings. We also want to reach out and help those who are less fortunate through prayer and good deeds. The St. Michael the Archangel Food Drive offers an excellent opportunity to instill a sense of giving to those who are in need. We ask you to take time to encourage your child’s involvement in these efforts so that their experiences in giving will leave a lasting impression on each child.
Language Arts
In reading, students will identify short and long vowel sounds. As part of Shared Reading, we are reading poems and chants related to Thanksgiving and Halloween. Our Guided Reading program will begin soon! Please ensure the Guided Reading book is practiced nightly and returned daily. The students will be re-reading the book and discussing it throughout the week. Our writing focus will continue to be List Writing and blending 3 and 4 letters together to form simple words.

Math
This month, we will focus on Numbers to 31. Daily exposure to manipulatives will help the children read and print number words to 10, while demonstrating one-to-one correspondence between number and objects when counting. There will also be opportunities for the children to count forward and backwards and locate whole numbers on a number line.
Science
Our unit of focus will be Matter and Energy: Energy in our Lives. Students will be investigating and making inquiries about the sun as the Earth’s main source of energy. They will also learn about making responsible choices when conserving energy. They will also explore how different types of energy are used.

Curriculum Night
It was very nice to meet all of you on Curriculum Night. I hope you enjoyed touring the school and exploring your child’s classroom. This year promises to be a GREAT year! Together we can make a difference!
Thank you to all the parents who have downloaded the Reminder App. For those parents who have not, I strongly encourage you do so. This way, you will be notified via text/email of any updates on our class website. www.mrsgenuasclass.weebly.com
Guided Reading
Our Guided Reading program is about to begin. This is an exciting time for the children and they will want to share with you their new skill! We encourage you to read the guided reading book with your child on a daily basis and to give them the practice and confidence they need to become “good” readers! In addition, please remind your child to take good care of the books and return them the VERY NEXT day. Please keep the Guided Reading book inside the Guided Reading Folder.
Word Study
The grade one Word Study program will begin mid October. The children will be given a list of words to practice each week. These are words from the “HIGH FREQUENCY WORD LIST”, the most commonly used words. Students will write the words in their agenda each Monday. A Word Study homework folder will be going home on Monday as nightly homework. These activities are designed to reinforce the list words. The Word Study homework folder should be returned on Friday (Thursday if Friday is a P.A. Day) to be checked by the teacher. Please ensure your child completes only the assigned list. DO NOT WORK AHEAD!
Halloween Treats
We will be having a Halloween celebration on Friday, October 31, 2013. In keeping with our Safe School Policy, we kindly ask that you DO NOT send ANY food products to school for sharing purposes. Also, students should come dressed in costume and ready to dance! No masks or weapons please. Thank you for your co-operation. I look forward to a “BOO-tiful” day!
Pumpkin Fun
On October 30, the students will participate in fun pumpkin science, math and creative cravings. This fun filled afternoon can only take place with the help of parent volunteers and donated pumpkins. Your time and generosity are appreciated. More information to follow.
