Objects and Materials
and EVERYDAY STRUCTURES
We are surrounded by a wide variety of common objects and structures that have distinctive
shapes, patterns, and purposes.
In this unit, students will make the distinction between objects and materials through investigation of the observable characteristics of objects and the specific properties
of the materials from which the objects are made.
Students will learn that a structure is not only an object in itself but also the
supporting framework that holds an object together.
They will also investigate how the materials and structure of an object determine its purpose.
What is an object?
An object is a thing that is made of one or more material.

An object is a thing that is made of one or more material.
What is a structure?
A structure is not only an object but also the supporting framework that holds an object together.
The framework has to be made of a STRONG material in order to hold the object up!
This is the structure of an umbrella. It is made of metal. We cover the structure with fabric.

This is the structure of a chair. It is made of wood. Sometimes we cover it with fabric or we leave as wood. It depends on its purpose.
|
This is the structure of a house. It is made of wood. We cover it with bricks. |
What are materials?
Materials are the substances from which something is made.
Objects and everyday structures are made up of different materials to serve a specific purpose.
The properties of the materials help to serve its purpose.
Through investigation and hands on activities children will be able to describe the properties of materials that enable the objects and structures made from them to perform their intended function.
These snow pants are made of fabric so it is flexible for me to put on. It is also made of fabric that repels water. It keeps me dry when I am outside playing.
Imagine if your snow pants were made of metal? |
My school chair is made of plastic and metal. The metal and plastic are hard materials to keep me from falling. School can be a messy place. Plastic is easy to clean and it dries quickly.
Imagine if your school chair was made of fabric? |
Windows are made of glass. Glass is easy to clean. It keeps the rain and snow from coming inside my house. It is also transparent. I can see through it.
Imagine if your window was made of wood? or even fabric? |
Properties of Materials
Here are the science terminology children will be engaging in when describing their observations and explanations of objects, materials and their purpose.
Observable Characteristics
Children will use their 5 senses to explore characteristics of objects and structures. They will learn that an object is made a certain way in order to preform their intended purpose.
Here are a few examples:

Here are a few examples:
A stop sign is tall so that drivers can see it from a far distance.

A pair of scissors have 2 holes for our fingers to go through. It makes it easier to lift the blades up and down.
|
At home, challenge your child. Choose any object.
Ask them, what material is the object made?
What is the purpose of the object?
Why was that material used? What properties does it have to preform their intended purpose?
The object can be as simple as a fork, hammer, car tire or even a door.
Games, Games and More Games
Here are some on-line games the children have been playing at school.
