High Frequency Words
“Sight Words” are words that children are usually not able to use their reading strategies with. Sight words should be learned through memory. Learning these words will help build fluency in your child's reading.
Help your children build their reading fluency by practicing their sight words. All students have been tested on their sight words and the appropriate level will be sent home for them to practice. We want to encourage our children to be successful, so have them practice a few words at a time. Below, you will find a few games and activities that you can use to help your child be successful. They will be re-tested in November. If you find that your child is ready before November, feel free to write a note in the agenda and I will test them earlier.

Make learning these words an enjoyable experience! Here are some activities you can do with your child to help them along. Remember...KEEP IT FUN!!!
Road Race
Choose 6 sight words and write them across the top of your Road Race. Roll the dice and see which word you have to print again. Which word will finish the race first? |
Roll-Say-Keep
Place 6 sight word cards down on your Roll-Say-Keep mat. Roll the dice and read the word that is on the number you rolled. If you read it correctly you can keep the card. The person with the most cards wins! |
Playdough
Our kids love play dough! Have them write the words out of playdough and read the words back to you. |
Go Fish Sight Word Game
Make your own deck of sight-word cards by printing two sets of the Sight Word List on card stock.
How to Play: Each player is dealt seven sight-word cards, and the rest of the cards are neatly stacked face down in a pile in the center of the table. As in the card game, “Go Fish,” players take turns asking each other for specific cards to make a pair. For example, Player One may ask Player Two, “Do you have the word ‘the’?” If Player Two has that card in her hand, she gives the card to Player One, who pairs it with the matching “the” card in his hand to make a pair. If Player Two does not have the card she is asked for, she says, “Go fish!”, and Player One must draw a card from the pile to add to his hand. The first player to collect the matching cards to all the cards in his or her hand wins the game!
