Remembrance Day is approaching very quickly. As Canadians, it is a time to reflect upon the men and women who have given up their lives for our freedom. It is also an opportunity for Christians, like us, to reflect upon the life of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Jesus’ commandment to love our neighbours urges us to bring peace into our world, and more importantly, into our homes and amongst our families. May peace be with you and your family as we journey towards the Advent season.
Religion and Family Life
“We hear the story of God through Jesus,” offers an opportunity for the children to learn about Jesus’ teachings using stories from the Bible. Some stories we will share include The Feeding of the Five Thousand, Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man, The Lost Sheep, The Prodigal son and many others.
Lest we Forget
The Grade One students will participate in various activities reflecting on peacemaking and effective strategies for conflict resolution. Through continued role-playing, integration of the arts and literature, it is my goal for each student to realize that they can make a difference in their immediate environment. Remembrance Day Paraliturgy will take place on November 11th at 10:45 am.

Our Guided Reading program is well underway. It is important that your child reads and returns his/her book daily. This will allow your child to fully benefit from the lessons and activities. Our focus in writing will be using greater detail in our sentences using adjectives and conjunctions. Sight words and oral communication continue to develop through poetry and choral
Reading experiences. Please have your child practice the sight word list given to them at the beginning of the year, as they will be re-tested at the end of this month. Together, we will develop successful readers.
Math
Our next unit will be focusing on Data
Management. The students will be graphing, analyzing and interpreting the results of surveys. Students will create concrete graphs with real objects as well as make pictographs. They will use labels to make sense of graphs, charts and tables.
Science
We continue to work on the unit: Energy in our Lives. The visit from Scientists in the School last month was a worthwhile, educational experience.

I am extremely happy with the progress the children have made thus far in grade 1. Progress reports will be distributed on November 11th. Parent Teacher Interviews will take place on November 13th and 14th. More information about progress reports and interview times will be sent home in the School Newsletter. I look forward to meeting with you.
Pumpkin Fun was a GREAT success. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time and joined in on all the PUMPKIN FUN! I would also like to thank all the parents who donated a pumpkin. The children and I appreciate your generosity and the morning of fun would not have been possible without your donations! Thank you very much!
We had a “BOO-tiful” time on Halloween! The costumes were awesome! The children ALL enjoyed the Witch’s Brew! I think the magic potion REALLY worked!!! The children are SMARTER than they already are!
The “ENERGY” workshop was a HUGE success. The grade 1 children were excited as they investigated and explored all about the different types of energy. They learned that the SUN is the earth’s most important source of energy. They were super excited to learn that the sun’s energy can make things work and it is called SOLAR ENERGY. I would like to send a BIG thank you to all the parents for volunteering their time and helping out! Your time is greatly appreciated and once again programs like these will not be possible without your help! Remember to visit: http://www.alliantenergykids.com to help your child learn more about energy.
Winter is just around the corner! As the weather is changing, I encourage students to wear hats, gloves and warm jackets to school. Please remember to label all articles of clothing. An extra pair of socks and change of clothing (to be kept in their baskets) during the winter months is also recommended. Along with winter weather are the runny noses. If parents have not sent Kleenex boxes to our classroom, it would be GREATLY appreciated!
As you already are aware our guided reading program is well on its way and the children have been bringing books home. Here are just a few things you can do when a book is brought home:
v Let your child read it to everyone in the house! Learning to read is an exciting period for your child, and they will want to share it!
v Ask your child questions about the story such as: What happened at the beginning/end? Who were the characters? What surprised you? What would you have done? Did you wonder about anything?
v Make connections! Does this story remind you of another story you read? Does it remind you of something that happened in your life?
v Practice comprehension! Make sure your child includes detail included in the story, specific vocabulary and the character names!
v Play a game whereby you turn to a page in the book…you say a word and the child should find the word and then write it down quickly on a piece of paper.
Above all, have fun Reading!!! Together, we will develop successful readers!
I extend my thanks to all my parents for your continued support and efforts in fostering a strong connection between home and school. Please feel free to contact me regarding any concerns.
