Data Management
For the next while, our focus in mathematics will be graphing and taking surveys. We will begin our work with graphing sorting items into groups. Students will first work with items in 2 groups (such as answering yes or no to a question) then work with items in more than 2 groups (such as telling your favourite among 3 flavours of ice cream). Students will show their sorted information on different types of graphs. In grade one we focus on simple bar graphs and pictographs. picture graphs.
Later, we will gather our own information by asking questions to our classmates and keeping track of the answers using tallies. They will then take their tally chart and transfer the information they have gathered into a bar graph and/or a picture graph.
Children will be expected to discuss and compare the data on graphs using comparative language. They will use math words such as more, most, least, less.
Some examples of comparative language include:
· More students in our class chose summer than winter as their favourite season.
· The least favourite colour chosen in our class was blue.
· There are 6 students in our class that like pizza more than hamburgers.

Activities you can try at Home
Try some of these activities with your child at home.
1. When you see a graph or chart in a magazine or newspaper, share it with your child to show him or her how we use graphs to share different kinds of information.
2. Sort items in your home into 2 groups (vegetables, coins, toys, socks or other clothing). Then create a graph to show what you found out.
