For the next little while students will first explore 2-D shapes then move on to 3-D shapes. The begin by using their senses (touch and sight) to identify shapes and to serve some of their features. They gradually learn to describe attributes of shapes and to make generalizations about them.
Building and constructing are the KEY components of this unit. The students will create 3-D shapes using concrete materials. These activities offer many opportunities for students to
describe, explain and summarize their understanding.

2-D shapes
The children will learn that 2-D shapes are flat and closed. They will learn to name the shapes, describe their attributes, and find objects in their immediate environment of that shape.
Here is a chart that shows the different 2-D shapes children will explore and their attributes.
Whenever you see one of these shapes at home ask your child, "how do you know?"
Have them explain their thinking.

Children will sort, re-sort and re-sort the shapes based on their attributes.
Using their MATH words they will describe how and why they sorted the way they did.
Here is one way!
Children can sort shapes in many, many, many different ways.

Children will also use pattern blocks to make shapes.
